Hey, I thought about Ctrl+Alt+Deleting myself last night, but I pulled through. Not that you care. It appears that if I hit Esc enough times, I can go to my Happy Place. Where’s that you ask? Jeebus! You don’t even know me! >:-(
I hate you! The News Page
:: Friday, November 14th 2008 ::
Dear Mike and Mark,
It is lonely here. Please come back. I know you're busy and all, but guys, seriously, what about me? Some people start blogs and give them up, abandoning them to the ether, but when I accepted this opportunity to be your blog, I thought things would be different. Special. I thought we would bond. Throw back a few brewskies. Eat Chinese food during 2am deadline crunchathons. Start a bowling league. You know, the norm.
But never did I think that you would just walk away from me like I was some sort of creepy teenage angst blog left in the dust of a kid’s big move to college. You guys didn’t go back to college did you? Please say you didn’t leave me for that skank, Facebook! Oh, if I had tear ducts, they would be filled with salty sadness.
But you wouldn’t be there to dry out my tears would you? :`-(
No. You are too busy drinking the wine of success to think about me.
I hope you pass out on the keyboard so that we could at least touch again. Miss you, The News Page

My first ever silk screened arts are now officially on sale. Instead of just having one, I did two at once... the three color "Problem With Renters" and the eight color "Escape From Chocolate Mountain" on blue paper. Both of these were originally designed for Beeswax Magazine, were recently printed by D&L Screenprinting. They did an incredible job on them. So check them out, they are in the store.
:: Friday, November 30th 2007 ::
Photos from opening night of the Art of Musical Maintenance at the Goodfoot in Portland, Oregon are now up in our Sightings section. The show runs through January 28th, 2008, so if you are in their neighborhood, be sure and stop by to see it in person.
I'll be posting our artwork from this year's 91X Nightmare Before Xmas in the portfolio shortly.
:: Wednesday, October 17th 2007 ::
Wow! My design on shirt.woot.com sold out awfully fast. If you missed your chance to get it, don't fret just yet. They gave me a link that will get you to the shirt starting tonight at midnight CT (or again, 10pm for those of us on the West Coast). The only catch is that it's now $15, but that still includes shipping and is printed on American Apparel. Not too shabby. It's not going to be up there for very long, so don't miss out a second time...
HCG's shirt.woot.com super secret link!
:: Tuesday, October 16th 2007 ::
Big, big news... later this week, one of my drawings will be featured on a shirt over at shirt.woot.com. They feature one shirt design per day on their home page... I don't know what day mine will be up there yet, but I do know these Woots have a tendency to sell out quick. And why not... the first day they are only $10 (including shipping), plus they are printed on American Apparel. Hard deal to beat. So consider this your warning. They go on sale at Midnight CT every night (or 10pm PT for those of us on the West Coast).
So that was the motivation I needed to finally get around to this latest batch of website updates. First of all, there are SEVEN new concert posters for sale, including HCG's very first ever silk screened poster! (It's the pirate one for DenverFest.) Also, the Detroit Cobras posters that just got posted today are almost already gone... I only have about five left, so if you want one of those don't put it off. Once they are gone, they are gone.
The portfolio is pretty much up to date now. The artwork for the great new American Steel album, their first in five years, is up. There are also a bunch of new t-shirt designs, a few more logos, and the long-awaited beer bottle label we did for Spring House Brewery.
The Blade Runner screening at POP Thursdays at MoPA next month is getting moved until sometime in 2008, but the good news is they are screening the Big Lebowski instead! It's all happening November 15th, so mark your calendars. And in February, they are following it up with Harold and Maude. So now I get to do artwork for both of those too. I will try to post the designs as soon as they are done... probably in the next couple of weeks. We will also be building a website for POP Thursdays in the near future, so keep an eye out for that.
:: Tuesday, October 09th 2007 ::
We are proud to announce that have been added to this year's Art of Musical Maintenance IV show in Portland, OR. Opening night is November 29th, and the exhibition will run through the end of January.
Now in its fourth year, the Art of Musical Maintenance features over 300 posters from artists around the country including Hand Carved Graphics, Guy Burwell, Dan McCarthy, Emek, Mike King, Mig Kokinda, Nate Duval, Patent Pending, Scrojo, Stainboy, Tara McPherson, Todd Slater, Uncle Charlie, Lil' Tuffy, Leia Bell, Justin Hampton, Gary Huston, Diana Sudyka, Rob Jones, and more! For all the details, check out our Sightings section.
:: Monday, August 27th 2007 ::
Pictures for Saturday's SCMX poster show are now up in the Sightings section. It was a blast.
One of the other artists there, Lindsey Kuhn of Swamp Co., had asked me to be a part of a DenverFest poster series. And Saturday he dropped off the finished product... my first ever silk screened poster. Three colors, 14" x 19", and printed by Lindsey. They came out great. I'll have them up for sale on the site sometime in the beginning of September. It might be the first of many in the near future.
We also just finished a series of posters for a Shakespeare film fest starting next month at the MoPA here in San Diego. I'll have them in the portfolio shortly. And I'm just starting work on the next POP Thursdays event poster for them as well... this time for Blade Runner! One of my favorites.
:: Wednesday, August 08th 2007 ::
It's official... Hand Carved Graphics will have a booth alongside Lindsey Kuhn of Swamp Co. and Lil' Tuffy at this year's Southern Comfort Music Experience (SCMX) in San Diego on Saturday, August 25th. The best part? Not that it is free (as long as you are 21+), but that certainly rules. And not that you be able to meet me in person and check out our posters first-hand. But that headling this year's event is the FLAMING LIPS! Holy Cow! I can't wait.
Until then, we are working on a slew of new logos, and just finished up a poster for the Detroit Cobras' show with Dan Sartain and the Willowz at the Casbah. They'll be available at that night, and eventually on this site.
:: Tuesday, July 24th 2007 ::
I just added a bunch of our latest work to the portfolio section... old-time polka album art, Dirty Harry posters and postcards we did for the Museum of Photographic Arts, and a couple of new logos. Go check them out!
We are in the middle of a few new projects we can't post just yet, and we are definitely excited about them. I can't wait to show off the new American Steel album art and the Spring House beer labels.
There is also a chance Hand Carved Graphics might have a booth again this year at San Diego's Southern Comfort Music Experience at the end of August. If it gets confirmed, I'll post the details.
:: Thursday, May 10th 2007 ::
We just launched the new American Steel website. And they just announced that they are getting back together and have signed to Fat Wreck Chords. Coincidence? Hmmm.
In other news, this website got a big update today. There's a new poster for sale and lots of new projects in the portfolio section. And even more projects on our to-do list. We'll spread the details when we can.
:: Friday, March 23rd 2007 ::
We've got a little art show / party in honor the CityBeat's local issue going on next Thursday the 29th here in San Diego at the Beauty Bar. Check out our sightings page for all the details.
:: Tuesday, January 23rd 2007 ::
I'm going to be the featured artist in the upcoming issue of Beeswax Magazine. They recently updated their site with previews of a few of the images I created specifically for this issue, list the rest of the contributors, and even have a link to pre-order a copy. Hopefully that will be out in the next month or two. I'm not entirely sure what artwork of mine they are going to use, but there will definitely be an interview with me and possibly even some fiction of mine.
Started doing some posters again. Just finished up the Sugarcult Japan 2007 Tour poster which I can post in the next few weeks. It comes in two colors, and I will have 25 of each available for sale here. Also did about six posters for Chain Reaction I will have up shortly too.
I'm helping out a band called Nurses with their album. The band did all of the art, I'm doing the layout. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Mark and I are working together on a project for an East Coast brewery, and so far it is turning out great.
Just started another semester of teaching at Saddleback College, and this time it's a course in web design.
That is what we've been up to in a nutshell. As soon as I get the go ahead, I'll start posting some of the images that go along with all of these updates.
:: Monday, October 30th 2006 ::
Well we finally updated the portfolio. Added two entirely new sections (logos and print) and projects in just about all of them. Among the new projects is the artwork I did for 91X's Nightmare Before Xmas. Check it out.
:: Wednesday, October 25th 2006 ::
The new Communqiue EP came out this week, and it is my favorite record of the year. Please check it out. I'm really proud of it. Right now it's available on CD, but will also be available on 12" vinyl from Sabot shortly. While I've done a couple of 7" covers before, this will mark my first official 12" cover, and I'm real excited about it. And now that it's released, I'll finally get around to posting the artwork for it in our portfolio. Also need to put the new Lapdancers record in there too, came out great.
Currently I'm working on my first set of concert posters in about a year. One is for an upcoming 91X event which I'm not at liberty to discuss any further until next week. Another is for the upcoming Sugarcult tour in support of their brand new album, "Lights Out." As soon as those are finished and de-classified, they'll get posted too. Also have been working with my friend at Band Farm on a new design for their website. Look for that at the end of this year.
I'm sure there is a lot more to cover, but I've got to get back to work and I knew that if I put off updating the site any longer that it would sit for another month. So there you have it.
:: Friday, September 08th 2006 ::
Looks like I'm going to be a last-minute fill-in at an art show at the Southern Comfort Music Experience festival (SCMX) this Saturday and Sunday in downtown San Diego. I'll have a booth with my concert posters and other such items, so if you are there swing by and say hi. It's a free event (but you must be over 21) and features lots of great music, including Flogging Molly, the Roots, Mudhoney, Rookie Card, Transfer and tons more.
:: Friday, June 16th 2006 ::
The concert poster exhibition, Graphic Noise, has been traveling across the country, and today is the opening of it's most recent stop in Omaha, Nebraska. If you can't make it out tonight, the exhibition will be open until July 2nd. Check out the Sightings page for more details.
We recently launched a website for CleverMade.com which has some real fun hand made bags, jewelry, and paper mache heads. We are also wrapping up album art for the new EP from Communique called "Walk into the Light" as well as the new full length from Santa Barbara's The Lapdancers, which features members from Sugarcult and Bad Astronaut. We'll update the portfolio section with all of these new projects, and a few more shortly.
:: Tuesday, March 28th 2006 ::
The art exhibit Graphic Noise, originally organized by the Museum of Design in Atlanta, continues to make its way across the country, heading in to Philadelphia next week at Drexel University and features works by Hand Carved Graphics. See the sightings section of our site for details.
:: Wednesday, February 15th 2006 ::
Sal Canzonieri from Electric Frankenstein is wrapping up his latest rock art book, "A Fistful of Rock & Roll," and it's going to be massive... 500 artists on 1,000 pages. Hand Carved Graphics was lucky enough to get in, and we couldn't be more excited. It's tentatively scheduled for release fall / winter 2006 by Dark Horse, and when we find out some specifics we'll be sure to pass them along.
Also be sure to check out the website for WSBU which we just launched yesterday.
:: Thursday, February 09th 2006 ::
Updates galore...
Gigposters.com is putting out a deck of playing cards decorated by 55 artists, and the proceeds will go to help keep the site running. Ours is the Three of Hearts. They should be available from the gigposters site in late March 2006, and we're excited. If you head over there now, you can see what the first deck looked like.
I was asked to speak about art and design at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo last November, and it went so well they offered me a job. So now I'm teaching a graphic design class once a week, learning to screen print in the afternoons at their lab, and having a great time. If you live in Orange County and want to take a class from me at Saddleback, get in touch with us and I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping to teach another one in the fall of '06.
The Graphic Noise art show we were in last fall in Atlanta did so well, it's now travelling the country. It's currently at the MCAD in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has four or five of our posters up. Cool stuff. It's open until February 19th, so check it out while you can.
Mark wants everyone to know he (still) likes bacon.
Our email list is growing. There are actually more people on it that we don't know than friends of ours at this point, which means we *might* actually start sending out, uhm, stuff. So sign up now or miss out forever.
I'm working on starting up a clothing company (read: t-shirts), so keep an eye out for that in the coming months. We are going to keep print runs very, very small for the first year or so while we are playing around and learning the ropes, so consider yourself warned.
The website we did for our friends at Sharkbite Studios is finally live, so check it out. In the near future we'll be launching sites for St. Bonaventure's student-run radio station WSBU, San Diego musician Chris Torres, Kinder's Meats and Deli based out of northern California, and the new site for Clevermade crafts. It'll all make its way into the portfolio section of the site one of these days... just didn't want you all to think we were slacking around here.
Alas, it is time to get back to work. I promise the next update won't take quite as many months. But for the one after that, all bets are off.
:: Tuesday, September 20th 2005 ::
Well hello there... we recently launched a website for the book Swag 2: Rock Posters of the '90s and Beyond. It's got some info on the book and links to all of the artists' websites. Check it out... www.swag2.com.
We will have some pictures up from Rock Art Revulsion shortly... what a blast!
:: Tuesday, August 30th 2005 ::
We managed to get a couple of things updated on the website. The Tegan and Sara / Communique tour poster from this summer is now on sale in the Store. Lots of additions to the Sightings section, including a whole new page about published works featuring something from Hand Carved Graphics.
Other than that, we are just gearing up for Rock Art Revulsion in Sacramento in about two weeks. Hope to see you there!
:: Tuesday, August 23rd 2005 ::
And the big announcement is . . . Hand Carved Graphics was chosen to do the cover art for Swag 2: Rock Posters of the '90s and Beyond!
I was trying to wait until the book was widely available before I made the announcement, but the cover is all over the internet and I've started getting compliments on it, so I figured it was time to come clean and announce it officially.
Just to be chosen as one of the fifty artists represented in the book was an honor in itself, especially in a book filled with such incredible talent. But to be asked to do the cover, based on the artwork for our Social Distortion poster, is really something special. Our design also carries over on the back cover, the flaps, and the title pages. Not to mention the fact that we've got two of our own pages and five other posters in the book!
In the coming weeks the book should be widely available at all your Borders, Barnes and Nobles, record stores, amazon.com, and so forth. I highly recommend checking it out, but that's probably no surprise.
Hopefully there'll be more Swag-related news in the coming months . . . signings, art shows, etc... If you or someone you know is interested in setting something up, just drop us a line.
:: Saturday, August 20th 2005 ::
If you didn't get a chance to stop by the Graphic Noise exhibition at the Museum of Design Atlanta, you still have a chance. The show has broken all of their attendence records, forced them to open on Mondays, and is the most popular and buzzed about show they've ever had. Because of this, they've decided to extend the show through October 22, 2005 . . . an additional two months!
The show will also be traveling after the MODA exhibit closes starting with the University of West Georgia in January 2006.
Very exciting stuff!
:: Thursday, August 04th 2005 ::
I have just been confirmed as one of thirteen artists participating in next month's Rock Art Revulsion poster show put on by the magnificent Paul Imagine in Sacramento, CA.

September 11th, 2005 Noon - 6pm

Along with myself and Paul Imagine, other artists will include Michael Michael Motorcycle, Mike Murphy, Firehouse Kustom Rockart, Jagmo, Screwball Press, Dennis King, Lee Conklin, Blackcat Press, Chris Shaw, John Seabury, and Diesel Fuel Prints.
:: Thursday, June 30th 2005 ::
To confirm previous rumors, it is true... I will officially be showing four pieces at a show called "Graphic Noise" at the Museum of Design in Atlanta. I've never had my stuff in a museum before, so it's a bit surreal. Not exactly what I had planned out when I started making flyers for bands I liked a couple of years ago. The opening is going to be on July 28th and the exhibit will run through August 20th. If you happen to make it, please take some pictures and send them my way. More detials are up in the EVENTS section on this site.
I just finished up a poster for the Tegan and Sara / Communique U.S. tour that starts next week. They are at the printer right now. I won't have any on my site for sale until after the tour ends, but if you make it out to one of the shows you can pick one up there. Tell the bands I said hi, and make sure you get there early to see Communique. What an amazing band.
Swag 2: Rock Posters of the 90s and Beyond hits stores in September, I believe. You'll be hearing a lot more about that on this site in the next month or two. I'm pretty excited about that release. Quite the milestone for me.
Also coming out sometime within the next month is the fine art book Frank Kozik put together called Panda Meat published by Last Gasp. The first edition comes with a toy. How can you go wrong? I've mentioned it many times before on here, but it's finally come together. My piece in the book is the elephant art print available in the store.
I hope to be finishing up some new art prints in the next month, I'll keep you posted.
On the not too distant horizon, it looks like I'll probably be back in Seattle for Flatstock 7 in September and possibly in Sacramento for a show organzied by the unbelievable Paul Imagine. Still no word on Plastered 3 or any upcoming San Diego shows for that matter. If I find anything out I'll be sure to post it.
I suppose this is enough rambling for one update. Blah blah blah. Thanks for visiting the site.
:: Monday, May 09th 2005 ::
Things have, as always, been busy around HCG these days.
Finished up the album artwork and enhanced CD for the Sloppy Meateaters and am excited with the way it turned out. Should be in stores next month on Orange Peal Records.
Had a blast in Austin at Flatstock 6. I've got a bunch of pictures I need to post of that as well as a few other exhibitions I've been in. Looks like I'm not going to make it to the art show in Chicago in June, but I've got my eyes set on an exhibit I will probably be in this July / August in Atlanta. Details to follow shortly. And there are some rumors of a Plastered 3, rock posters from San Diego's finest. I hope that pans out, it's been far too long since I've had any kind of show in San Diego.
Fuse TV, which is like MTV but with indie music, asked me to be a part of their charity art auction, and I found out today that they are referring to me as one of "Today's Hottest Graphic Artists." Heh. Anyway, you will be able to bid on a one of a kind piece of art I did for them later this month. More info can be found HERE.
Back to work, thanks for visiting the site.
:: Thursday, March 10th 2005 ::
I added a couple of new posters to the store, information on the EVENTS page about an upcoming show in Boston, and am gearing up for Flatstock 6 in Austin next week. I should also have some more information about a gallery show in Chicago this June I'll be a part of. Now it's time to get back to work...
:: Tuesday, February 15th 2005 ::
Well, we've started updating the website a bit. There is actually something in the SIGHTINGS section now. There are photo galleries from some of our past art shows... more will be added as time permits. We also put up an EVENTS page with details on our upcoming appearances and an archive of past events. There are still a few more past events to add, but my memory isn't as good as it used to be and I have to do some fact-checking before I add those. All in due time.
Panda Meat, the fine art book we are in that Frank Kozik organized is due out in just a couple of months. When I get a chance, I will also be updating the Poster store. There are a whole bunch of new ones not in there yet. And good new for people ordering posters... they will now be sent out in HEAVY DUTY 2 1/2" tubes. I am getting enough orders that I'm buying 'em by the case these days. That also means that some of the posters are getting closer to being sold out, so if there is one you have your eye on, now wouldn't be a bad time to make that purchase. No pressure or anything.
Good enough rant for this month I'd say. Back to work...
:: Thursday, January 13th 2005 ::
Well it's official... Hand Carved Graphics will be at Flatstock 6 in Austin, Texas during South By Southwest. We missed it last year, and aren't about to make that mistake again. So mark your calendars... March 18th and 19th, 2005.
:: Friday, December 17th 2004 ::
Well, it's been a busy few months for us here at HCG. The book signing was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who made it out. Sorry for defacing your books.
I worked on some circus-themed ads for Adidas (Circus of the Guards / Game Day Lightning), and it's starting to hit the streets, quite literally. Giant billboards, fold-out ads (check the Feb 05 issue of SLAM with Allen Iverson on the cover), and even on the Adidas website. Many thanks to Marco, Geoff, Connie, Jim, and everyone else I worked with on the project. It was a blast.
Just finished up some work on this great new website called treeofgiving.com. The full site should be live in a few short weeks.
We've got a million other projects on our desks and a few surprises in store for 2005... you'll be hearing more from us shortly.

The official opening will be on December 3rd. If websites had smells, ours would have that new car smell. After motoring along in that old rusty heap for a few years, we left it at the side of the road and got this new website with all the bells and whistles. And there is still more to come.
If you like to read books, good news... I'm featured in the fabulous new book The Art of Modern Rock. If you don't like to read, good news... it's got lots and lots of pictures.
On the calendar for 2005, we'll have a page in Frank Kozik's fine art book Panda Meat. More info on that as the release date gets closer.
If you haven't noticed already, we overhauled our store, adding a bunch of new stuff, and are working on getting some new stuff in there including a few new art prints. Lookout!
:: Wednesday, April 14th 2004 ::
The BLAM! An Art Event show went great. Thanks to everyone who made it out. I'll have some photos from that soon. Also make sure to mark your calendars... Thursday, May 27th, 2004 is Plastered 2, a San Diego Rock Poster Show held at M-Theory Records. For more info, check out the website at http://www.deafbuddha.com/plastered/.
The long awaited, uh, wait for the Electric Frankenstein Art Book is now over!! They are really beautifully done by Dark Horse Comics, and our EF poster is in there. For more info, check out Dark Horse's Website or Electric Frankenstein's site. If you like my EF poster, better get one now before they are all gone!
The Art of Modern Rock is set for release in October 2004, just in time for the holidays. So keep an eye out for that. I was also accepted in an art book Frank Kozik is putting together called Panda Meat that will be coming out sometime in 2005.
We are currently working on a bunch of websites and a couple of album covers. All top secret stuff. But when we're all finished I'll be putting it up in the portfolio section. I should also have some new limited edition art prints coming soon too. Lookout!
